On the Year in Wargaming feature, I was thinking that the 1st Avaloncon convention should have a place in 1991. It has to be big news that somewhere around 500 gamers attended the first Avaloncon, held in Camp Hill, PA for three “official” days of strategy gaming tournaments. Avaloncon was devoted playing these games we’d all been buying – and the competition was top of the line. Players from all over the world gathered in the small Pennsylvania town to battle for top honors in their favorite game. Most events had multiple heats, and many were elimination events – but others allowed participants to keep playing. Advanced Squad Leader was the largest single tournament that year with 91 players. (With a Swiss system tournament, over 200 games of ASL were played that weekend – I think I suffered permanent hearing loss from all those dice jangling in hotel drinking glasses!) But ASL was only one of over 50 tournaments. Avaloncon ’91 started a convention tradition that would swell to 1500 to 2000 players by the third year when it relocated to Baltimore, MD. - Russ Gifford |
