Digital Game Prototyping

Week 6: Front End / Splash Screen Interface Design;
Game Maker Tutorial 10
(3D Game Techniques)

We're moving on with Digital Game Prototyping by way of the next Game Maker Tutorial. The bulk of this lab session will be learning four different techniques on how 'old school' 3D effects can be achieved in Game Maker.

The link below is the homework assignment due at the beginning of the next class session.

Homework: Week 6

Quick Photoshop Lesson: Isometric Tiles Made Easy in Photoshop by Morphosis

This article from the Game Maker magazine has been re-designed to show you how to make tiles for the fourth of the these 3D game techniques, using an isometric view. It is only two pages long (with several illustrations), but it will help you nail down this game art style and is well worth adding to your class notebook.

Optional Reading:

These supplemental links are worth pursuing only if you wish to really learn the subject matter of game design in the broadest possible sense. This material will not be directly included in the exams, but if you're serious about being a game designer and delving deeply into the subject of game design art, craft, and science, here's some more lessons from others who have also "been there."

Shareware Tool: GraphicsGale

This animation graphics editor might be something you'd want to consider using to help with the old school pixel animations that Game Maker uses.
