Week 4 Homework: Midterm Examination

“The best way to learn games is to play games. The best way to make games is to work.” – Alan Emrich

Game Maker Tutorials:

Mod one of this week’s games: Take any one (or two, or all three, if you like) of this week’s tutorial games (Catch the Clown, Evil Clutches, and Galactic Mail) and modify it to make it more interesting. What I want you to do is “look under the hood” in Game Maker and go off exploring on your own – you need to spend a little time “playing around” with the cools things that you will find in Game Maker. Tweak some numbers here, change the art or sounds there, plug in a new rule if you like – just have fun! I want to see that you twiddle with some things in Game Maker on your own. Heck, you can even try reading the program’s Help files if you like!

You owe me at least one modified game. Make sure that your email includes 1) the game’s .gm6 file (not an .exe file; I never want you to send me those); and 2) an explanation in the Game Information display (i.e., the <F1> key) or the body of the email explaining to me what specifically you modified (so that I can focus at those features in particular when I grade this assignment for up to 10 points).

Hint: If you need more explicit directions, you can skip ahead to Chapter 5, pages 88 to 95 in The Game Maker’s Apprentice where more lessons about further developing Evil Clutches await!
