Modern Naval Battles III: The Expansion Kit box coverThe only questions to date have concerned the Air Defense of the new Carrier Air Group (CAG) cards.

Modern Naval Battles III Errata

There are 36 cards in the Air Module. There are 84 Action Deck supplementary cards.

The Carrier Air Group cards replace some of the information on the Ship cards. The ship's weapon mounts and ASW modifier stay the same. The ASW modifier is repeated on the CAG cards, though, for easy reference. The small "Air Strike" and "Air Cover" symbols are there to remind you of the number of squadrons set up for Air Strike or Fleet Defense. The Air Defense value listed for each CAG is correct.

Note that some of the Air Module planes have no chance of hitting the third row. If for some reason their Air Strike capability is enhanced (e.g., by Carrier Crew Efficiency), they will have a chance to succeed against the third row.

The Air Defense Symbol
In the first two games, this symbol represented a ship with exceptional Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM) capability and/or 6 to 12 fighters always on Combat Air Patrol over the fleet.

In this third part of MNB, the CAG cards detail the squadrons carried by each carrier. As a result, NATO carriers lost their Air Defense rating. This is because that rating was based on fighter cover, not exceptional SAM capability.

Soviet carriers, on the other hand, not only have fighters, but they also have exceptional SAM capability. This resulted in the Soviet carriers only having their Air Defense rating reduced, not eliminated (because their Air Defense rating was not based entirely on air cover, now covered by the CAG cards, like the NATO carriers).

The Enterprise CAG card has the red/black coloring reversed for "Attack Posture" and "Defense Posture."

Other Notes
The note at the end of the sister ship listing does not mean that you can only use one Oscar submarine, rather it means that you can only use the original SET of three Oscars from all three games.
